Interesting Adventure Melodrama from Grand National -----. The little studio that tried so hard for the Big Time but never got off the ground. Despite the low - budget trappings, WL deals with the building of the Panama Canal, a history that few North Americans even think about, let alone cholera / "Yellow Jack" fever. This little indie beat MGM's similarly themed Yellow Jack (38) to the cinemas. Big fan of the two leading ladies, the forgotten Tala Birell (a Dietrich competitor) who played a lady scientist in Nagana (1933) and Suzanna Kaaren, best - remembered for heroine role in the Bela Lugosi cult cheapie The Devil Bat (40) Ian Keith is so handsomely chiseled but comes across as more "villain" rather than Leading man material. Interesting to see Japanese actor Teru Shimada in a more substantial role than the bit parts he was usually consigned to in 30s cinema.

The best thing about this film is the children. Dickie Moore of course was pretty famous as a child and teen actor, but Cora Sue Collins steals the show easily. As far as I can tell, she's still alive at 95 years old! But Vivian Tobin - her acting really stands out from almost everyone else's here. Though she was born in New York City, her inflections and tone are very odd, possibly due in part to the dialogue and directing.

Something weird with the copy: strange vertical and lateral scrolling.

I think this was a precursor to his tv show dante's inferno. Dick Powell was under appreciated, great singer did many good movies, radio detective and helped start television with four star playhouse.

Where's his bag that he put into the white van and forgot to take then how he buy papers, doctor's fees etc. I couldn't understand but anyway he is a great actor and the film is a great lesson for all of us.

As a kid I was lucky enough to catch all the "Johnny" movies on local TV -- Johnny O'Clock, Johnny Apollo, Johnny Eager. Stations ran movies all the time, instead of infomercials. Good times.
